PERSONAL ESSAY PREWRITING ENG/220

How do we experience time? Engaging with Jesuit values. Students will read and analyze literary models to explore narrative techniques and then produce their own writing, partaking in peer revision. Requirements include informal responses, three formal essays, and a final. Advanced language skills and flexibility with advanced sentence structures, vocabulary, and idiomatic expressions are stressed so that students develop correct, clear, and coherent self-expression.

The course is open to second-semester freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, although incoming freshmen are always welcome to tutor as volunteers and take the course at a later date. Dual listed with THR This interdisciplinary course, team-taught by members of the English and Theatre Departments, offers a performance-oriented view of Shakespeare’s plays. This course will expose you to a variety of mostly American literature from the late 19th to early 21st centuries. The course is designed to give students a critical awareness of language and to teach language techniques through extensive readings.

This course, conducted as a workshop, is for students who are interested in exploring fiction writing and discovering unique voices as storytellers. Focusing on literature written by 20th century women authors, this course is designed to help students gain knowledge of women’s lives and writings; to show them the difference gender makes to the writing, reading, and interpretation of literature; to train them in the analysis of literature; and to teach them how to describe, analyze, and formulate arguments about literary texts.

This course prepares students to produce clear, well-developed, well-organized, grammatically correct writing. Students read an international spectrum of writers and are introduced to the diversity of literary styles writers use to examine and convey the consequences of genocide.
